Known as the monumental ensemble in Targu Jiu, is a tribute to fallen heroes during World War I, designed and built by Constantin Brancusi. The three components monumental sculptures, Table of Silence, Gate of Kiss and Endless Column, are arranged on the same axis, oriented from west to east, with a total length of 1275 m. “The Endless column” was inaugurated on 27 October 1938.
It has a height of 29.35 meters and is composed of 15 overlapping octahedral modules, respectively with the upper and lower ends of each half-module. Modules were called “beads” by Brancusi, the author.Sculpture is a stylization of funeral columns specific to the southern part of Romania.
Original name was “Column of endless gratitude” and was dedicated to the Romanian soldiers who died in World War I (1916), in the battles on the banks of the Jiu river.“Table of Silence”, made in limestone, represents the last supper before the soldiers confrontation in the battle. Time is “present”, represented by the circular arrangement of 12 hourglass-chairs , time which is measured. Everything in silence.“The gate of kiss”, which is located in the alley at the entrance of City Park, is carved from porous stone, extracted from quarries in the surrounding area, consisting of thick columns, rectangular, columns that are supporting an architrave larger than the columns, with the width of 6.45m, height 5.13 m and 1.69 m thick. On the faces of each column is found kissing symbol, two halves of a circle, so characteristic of Brancusi’s work.
