This afternoon’s episode of the brand new programme “Thunderbirds are Go” is actually a double length hour-long introductory special that will be the first of 26 episodes in the first series.
Here are five things you absolutely need to know about the reboot of the International Rescue team:
1. No strings attached
The new series entirely disposes with the marionette figures that were used in 1960’s original in favour of CGI characters. In a nod to the past the backgrounds will be live action real models though. The animation has been carried out by Weta, Peter Jackson’s workshop in New Zealand. They were the studio behind animation in The Lord of the Rings series and the film Avatar.

2. Big names – and old favourites – doing the voices
Rosamund Pike is the new Lady Penelope, and Kayvan Novak, of Phonejacker fame, is a new bow-tie-less Brains. Thomas Brodie Sangster, from Game of Thrones, The Maze Runner and Wolf Hall (or just the kid from Love Actually) will provide the voices for Gordon and John Tracy. David Graham reprises his original role as Parker, channelling what he describes as ‘posh cockney.’ The chauffeur uniform has been dropped for a rather FABulous turtle neck though.
3. There will be more women and ethnic minority characters: Merlin actress Angel Coulby plays Kay, an adopted sister to the Tracy brothers who is in charge of security on Tracy Island and former Casualty actress Adjoa Andoh voices Colonel Casey, commanding officer of the Global Defence Force.

4. This isn’t the first attempt at creating a reboot
A 2004 film Working Title film that starred Ben Kingsley as arch-villain ‘The Hood’ lost £20 million at the Box Office and was described by Thunderbirds creator Gerry Anderson as “the biggest load of crap” he had ever seen. He rejected an offer of £400,000 to attend the premiere. Many may remember the soundtrack song by Busted as the real highlight of a truly dreadful film.

5. There is going to be an environmental message
The plots of the episodes will all be original and many will apparently revolve around the impact and causes of environmental disaster. While flying rockets around willy-nilly may not be the greenest message to send hopefully the stories can mitigate this.
