Masculinity and tradition can seem like stable formulas in modern country, but there will always be those who complicate the math. Sam Hunt is a former football star whose debut album, “Montevallo” (MCA Nashville), is chock-full of aw-shucks entreaties — including some, like “Take Your Time,” that sound about as indebted to R&B as to any country norm. On Wednesday, he performs at Irving Plaza. (7 p.m., irvingplaza.com.)
The same night, Sturgill Simpson brings his world-weary but invigorated style to the Bowery Ballroom, drawing from “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music” (High Top Mountain), an album that renews outlaw conventions without bowing to conservatism. He’s a Nashville outlier in a completely different way from Mr. Hunt, which is another way of saying that the audiences for these two shows probably didn’t agonize much before charting a course.
