German bacteriologist who used to be one of the founders of immunology. In 1901 he received the first Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work on serum treatment, specifically for its use in the remedy of diphtheria.With the Japanese bacteriologist Kitasato Shibasaburo, he confirmed that it was conceivable to offer an animal with passiveimmunity against tetanus through injecting it with the blood serum of any other animal contaminated with the illness. Behring applied this antitoxin method to succeed in immunity against diphtheria. Administration of diphtheria antitoxin, developed with Paul Ehrlich and first efficiently marketed in 1892, became a routine part of the remedy of the disease.
