German chemist and corecipient, with Carl Bosch of Germany, of the 1931 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Bergius and Bosch have been instrumental in creating the hydrogenation method essential to transform coal dust and hydrogen directly into gasoline and lubricating oils with out keeping apart intermediate products.
