Harrison Ford Crashes Plane on Golf Course

The actor Harrison Ford was injured on Thursday when a single-engine, World War II-era training plane he was piloting crashed onto a golf course in Venice, Calif., shortly after takeoff from Santa Monica Airport.

Ben Ford, Mr. Ford’s son, said his father was “battered, but ok” in a tweet he said was sent from the hospital.

“He is every bit the man you would think he is,” Mr. Ford said of his father, who is 72. “He is an incredibly strong man.”

Mr. Ford’s plane had engine trouble upon takeoff and he had to make an emergency landing, said his publicist, Ina Treciokas. He was “banged up” but walked away from the accident, she said.

The Los Angeles Police Department, which said the plane had one occupant but would not identify him, said that the injured man was taken to Cedars-Sinai hospital in stable condition. The Los Angeles Fire Department said that he suffered “fair to moderate injury” in what it described as a “medium to high impact on the grass at Penmar Golf Course.”

Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration said that Mr. Ford’s plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Santa Monica Airport, NBC reported.

The police said that the airport was less than four milesfrom the scene of the crash and that the aircraft was a plane used to train pilots during World War II.

A police spokeswoman said that mechanical failure might have been to blame for the crash but that further investigation was required.

Television footage showed what was reported to be Mr. Ford’s plane lying on its belly on a golf green fringed by leafy trees, its nose crumpled but no flame or smoke visible.

Mr. Ford is an avid pilot who survived a crash before. In a 2008 interview with National Geographic, he described walking away from a helicopter crash after a mechanical failure that left the aircraft “not quite intact.”

“It was more or less a hard landing,” he said. “Luckily, I was with another aviation professional and neither of us was hurt — and both of us are still flying.”
